12 - MOOD BOARD - Music Video

Image
MOOD BOARD large part of these images are used to to their colour pallet, subject matter, or as context to possible intertextuality for the music video. Some of the images are frames/cover work for films, or album covers. This is predominantly as a way of reflecting other works that contribute to the inspiration behind certain qualities of this music video.

11 - STATEMENT OF INTENT - First Draft

DRAFT 1 How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words) The concept for my video is to represent the chosen track through strong narrative and style. I hope to be able to reflect the themes and tone of the original track well when creating the music video, while also keeping the video unique with my own personal style. I will have the narrative of the video predominantly feature the outdoors, including forests, moors, lakes, etc. This should fit in well with the folk genre of the music as well as the style and content of the song itself. This will then attract a specific audience due to this choice in strong representation of the music’s themes. This concept will fit into the core values of the record company, Sony Music, which is to “ inspire the world to do great things through the influence of music by promoting inspirational melodies and lyrics". I will achiev...

10 - KEY ELEMENTS - Checklist For Music Video

CHECKLIST Here is a checklist of certain aspects and ideas I would like to include in the music video, and keep in mind for the future. This will most likely be continually updated with new points. Necessary - Approx. 3 minutes long - Appeal to previously stated demographic - Include narrative - Include at least 2 different uses of "Mise-en-scène". - Include some kind of text/credits/graphics including name of track and artist.  - Include a varied range of camera shots - Include a varied range of lighting - Include at least two characters that fit into different social groups - Include effective and believable lip sync Other - Include some feature of intertextuality - Include a more unique use of typography - Feature a common theme and tone throughout all stages - May include some kind of animation - Utalise a distinct visual effect created in post production - Display logo for artist

9 - TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC - Aspirant New Casuals

Image
ASPIRANT NEW CASUALS Despite the band having a fairly vague demographic, reaching from young teens to the older generations, the main target audience would be the Aspirant New Casuals;  Mainly as listeners of wide variations of folk, New Casuals and Aspirants are often defined to have a "low-key vibe". This group predominantly stays around the ages of 16-25, common with both males and females. Their clothing often focuses more on what is comfortable, while still keeping an eye on what is fashionable and trendy for their demographic. I am hoping that the music video will be able to appeal strongly to these demographics by embracing the areas that will interest them.

8 - COPYRIGHT PERMISSION - Republic Records

7 - THINGS TO CONSIDER - Intertextuality

INTERTEXTUALITY Intertextuality will of course inevitably be used in the music video indirectly, but I would like to make at the very least an attempt to utalise this technique as the results can be incredibly effective. Similarly to the previously mentioned Lord Huron music video "Time To Run", the video heavily references the style and acting of spaghetti westerns, down to the editing that makes the video itself appear old. I would like to do something similar in my own music video, referencing the style and appearance of films around the '50s and '60s. I think this will help match the sound of the track as well as create a nostalgic theme to the video itself. It is very likely, however, for me to use intertextuality in the video referencing previous shots directly. This will help to continue the story forward and add some detail to the visual information given to the audience.

7 - THINGS TO CONSIDER - Typography

Image
TYPOGRAPHY If I am to include some kind of typography into the music video, I would like to be able to include the text without the need for editing, or at least with the illusion of that. On the other hand, I would like to be able to do this through a technique of showing text on screen to represent what a character is writing/typing.  I would like to take inspiration from the Ben Stiller film "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", in which the film uses an incredibly innovative way to show opening credits or other pieces of text that is embedded into the set of the film through visual affects. In the image shown, the film shows us a text the character has gotten through making it appear carved in the mountain side. I think this is an amazing and incredibly unique way of conveying information through text, without doing something simple like just showing a shot of the characters phone instead.

7 - THINGS TO CONSIDER - Lip Sync

LIP SYNC As using lip sync in this projects is mandatory, I'll likely use it fairly irregularly, but when it is used it is to pronounce a certain lyric in the song when it most matches the narrative in the video. This is in the hopes that the visuals will then link much closer with the track. I am also considering interweaving the narrative parts of the music video will shots that interact more directly with the audience, which would also utalise lip sync much more efficiently.

7 - THINGS TO CONSIDER - Lighting

Lighting Due to the fact that my music video will most likely be shot predominantly outside, lighting may become an issue. The shoots will have to be done in the afternoon-evening, and I will also most likely have to also use some hidden artificial lights to achieve certain effects. Because I will want most of my lighting to achieve a warmer tone, I will want to do a lot of shooting in the late afternoon as then I can use the "Golden Hour" sunset to my advantage. This would, however, mean that I would have a very limited time to take as much footage as possible, and will have to insure that continuity is maintained throughout the different shots. I can also encourage this lighting effect in editing, although I don't want to have to rely too much on post-production.

6 - PAST VIDEOS - Ends of the Earth,

Image
PAST VIDEOS Ends of the Earth The music video created for one of the artist's earlier songs "Ends of the Earth" was done with 2D digital tweening animation, as well as including a few 3D stop motion shots. The way that the whole music video has been composed utalised both the characters and sets to be entirely in silhouette, using colour cautiously for the backdrops or to represent important areas of the narrative. I really like this animation style, and I like how the animators had created this unique 2D flat aesthetic, showing the characters always in profile. I also really appreciate the way that the artists created a lot of the backgrounds and establishing shots, in which the animation style switches to using 3D hand built sets Lonesome Dreams The music video for the song Lonesome Dreams tells a slightly more complex story in comparison to the last. I really like the way that the establishing shots for this music video were shot, as well as the visual aesthetic of t...

5 - TRACK CHOICE - Meet Me In The Woods

Image
MEET ME IN THE WOODS I had written up a list of songs that I had an interest in and would fit the requirements for the coursework, each of which I had different reasons for considering. The majority of my initial choices could not count as anthem songs at all, and it took me some time to find the right song to work with for this task. In the end I decided to go with "Meet Me in the Woods" by Lord Huron. This song was released in the album "Strange Trails" in 2005. The structure of the song gives way for a similarly structured music video, giving well divided sections that can sync well with a narrative in the music video that of course uses moments in the visuals to match the audio. Another reason I decided to choose this song is because of the tone that it has, as well as the immediate visual implications that are made in the lyrics. Despite this, the lyrics are still incredibly vague, with no confirmed meaning to them, at least as of yet. This also gives me more c...

4 - GENRE OF MUSIC - Anthems

ANTHEMS Anthems are a lesser-known genre of music that generally also include a large variety of other genres inside of it's definition. For a song to be classified as an anthem, it must include several of these points: - An anthem must be able to be identified or commonly represent a certain group or cause. - An anthem will most often represent a the ideals of a group of people or a certain moment in time. - An anthem should be uplifting and rousing, and able to be sung together by a large group of people. - An anthem should likely be Influential in the group, cause, moment or body of people that it is associated with. Some examples of an anthem include: We Are The Champions (Queen), Hey Jude (The Beatles), YMCA (Village People), Wonderwall (Oasis), Dancing Queen (Abba), Living On A Prayer (Bon Jovi), etc.

SONY MUSIC "Sony Music Entertainment", also know as "Sony Music", is a multi-national American music and entertainment company, it's parent company conglomerate being "Sony Group Corporation".  The calculated salary of the company made from April 2020 to March 2021 was estimated to be around $5.77 Billion USD. In 1938 the company was then acquired by "CBS Records" (First as "Columbia", eventually renamed to "CBS Records" in 1966). 2 - STAR IMAGE - Peter Gabriel

Image
PETER GABRIEL Peter Gabriel is one of the biggest names in music history. He was born in 1950 and became well known in the music industry as the lead singer of the band Genesis in 1967, alongside Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Chris Stewart, and Mike Rutherford. Due to their young age, they originally took on a school-boy look for the band. This soon changed, however, when Gabriel began promoting the band with an increasingly lavish and extravagant look, which slowly gave the band more and more commercial success.  One Gabriel's time with Genesis eventually came to a close, he gave himself another image shift that would prove more success in keeping up with the music industry, as he no longer presented himself with lavish or extravagant clothing and aesthetics, and instead began favoring a simpler, restrained look. This matched the similar shift in music for the singer-songwriter, in which his later music had a more socially-conscious and self aware tone.

Image
STEVE BARRON Steve Barron is an Irish filmmaker and director born in 1956, Dublin.
