2 - AUTER DIRECTOR - Steve Barron

STEVE BARRON

Steve Barron is an Irish filmmaker and director born in 1956, Dublin. He started work in films as a camera assistant, and slowly growing to have directed for a huge number of films, TV shows and music videos, as well as doing all sorts of other works. Some notable works include directing a number of episodes from the television series "The Storyteller", produced by Jim Henson, along with directing the films "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in 1990 and "The Adventures of Pinocchio" in 1996.

He is most known, however, for his work on Micheal Jackson's music video for the song "Billie Jean", Bryan Adams' music video for both "Summer of '69" and "Run to You", as well as directing the music video for Aha's "Take on Me".

It is particularly notable for his unique use of rotor-scoping in the Aha music video. This is the technique of drawing over frames of video, which has been around for over a century, with the term first being coined by a massive pioneer in animation, Max Fleischer, in 1915. This use of the rotor-scoping technique gave the music video huge critical success, and gave way to further success for his career.

At the MTV Music Video awards, this music video won six awards in total, "Best New Artist in a Video", "Best Concept Video", "Most Experimental Video", "Best Direction in a Video", "Best Special Effects in a Video", and "Viewer's Choice". It was also nominated for another two awards, "Best Group Video" and "Video of the Year".
