SHOT DETAILS AND CONSIDERATIONS

In the first shot of the video, I would like to make use of a single mise-en-scene shot (I imagine with the camera slowly zooming out to create motion and reveal more to the audience slowly rather than overloading the eyes all at once). It would reveal everything needed about the character and their lifestyle; putting work over anything else. Through one or two simple actions, such as closing the curtains to block out the sun, this could be conveyed. This would also cause the lighting to change inside of the room. It will be much darker, with much less vibrant tones.

Later on in the video, most likely the very end, I would like to replicate this first shot similarly to create a parallel, with the only change being that the character is no longer there. The curtains originally shown would also be wide open, allowing the sunlight and warm tones to pour into the room.

I am considering after the first shot of the video to have some establishing shots of the area around the building showing forests and trees, in which the sunlight will be bright and cause a predominantly orange-yellow colour palette. This would help set the tone for the rest of the video, while also immediately creating two separate entities that are represented by the setting. Each change of shot would be in time with the music, matching the beats that stand out the most.

I was playing around with the idea of personifying the forest, without making it too obvious as being a whole character in of itself. Its personality would not be consistent, and instead it would purely show a mood. This would be reflected in the weather, time of day, events, etc.
In the end I decided not to attempt to build the setting as a character, as there is very little time to conduct it and having to try to relate the moods to the forest will most likely eventually become confusing and pointless.

The song itself is built off of the idea of “The Unknown”, so this is crucial to be able to portray in the video. This means that when shooting in the forest and other areas outside, the audience will not be given information of what exactly is going on. Because of this, it will probably feel like there is a hidden meaning behind the video that is being shown. This matches the way that the original song has been written, as it gives a very vague sense of story, without providing any details.

STORY PLAN

The plot of the video will be very simple. The majority of it will feature somewhere outdoors. The first verse will show the main character venturing into some kind of woods nearby in search of their dog which has just ran away, being particularly cautious.

They continue to stumble through the area, finding a personal interest for the plants,  wildlife and environment. Eventually they come back out of the woods and continue their regular life. The video will go on to show the character continuing to explore a variety of different environments before they come across a second character. This second character is a lot less realistic, shown to be someone who lives in the woods. This will be shown through their appearance particularly. The two characters befriend one another and continue to explore the area until the sun begins to set.At night it’s shown that the second character is a ghost (?) due to the fact that they have no reflection in the water. (I will try and foreshadow this through using missing posters in the backgrounds of earlier scenes, although not through being too obvious and obnoxious).

This is incredibly brief and includes only the earliest ideas so the end result will inevitably change a lot.
